Counseling

Hello! I'm Ms. Goodyear, and I'm so excited to be the counselor at High Point. I earned my M.Ed at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and my Ed.S at the University of Georgia. As a school counselor, my goal is to make sure that every child benefits from a quality education. Through core curriculum lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling, I aim to help students learn how to use their own strengths to overcome obstacles and be successful in their academic environment. I am thrilled to be a member of your team!

Counseling Mission

High Point's comprehensive, developmental school counseling program supports social-emotional growth, career development, and academic achievement. The counselor collaborates with stakeholders to provide each student with an equitable educational experience by continuously using data to identify and close gaps. The counselor fosters a positive learning environment that encourages creativity, expects a growth mindset, celebrates diversity, and pushes students to become the best versions of themselves. In this environment, students gain the skills to be future leaders and globally inded citizens.

Counseling Vision

High Point’s students will graduate and make meaningful contributions in a dynamic, increasingly diverse society. They will be armed with the skills necessary to succeed in both college and career settings and have the drive to excel in either environment. Our students will communicate, collaborate, and lead with kindness, respect, and compassion. They will be role models in their communities and continuously seek opportunities to grow.

Counseling Services

Core Curriculum Lessons

I aim to meet with classes monthly in order to provide developmentally appropriate lessons to all students. These lessons may focus on a variety of topics such as collaborating with others, goal setting, or appreciating differences. All lessons align with the American School Counselor Association's (ASCA's) Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success.

Small Group Counseling

Some students may benefit from a small group setting. Small groups typically include 5 to 6 students and take place over the course of several weeks. These groups may be focused on a variety of skills or topics such as making and keeping friends, study skills, emotion management, divorce, or grief.

Individual Counseling

Should an individual concern arise, students are welcome to meet with the counselor. Individual counseling sessions are short-term. Meeting with the school counselor is not a replacement for mental health counseling or psychotherapy. Should a student need extra assistance, the counselor with discuss other options with that student's parent(s) or guardian(s).

Confidentiality Statement

The ASCA Code of Ethics requires that I maintain confidentiality with all students in the counseling setting. This means that whatever the student tells me will stay between us, unless:

  • The student may be getting hurt or is in danger of being hurt
  • Someone else may be getting hurt or is in danger of being hurt
  • The student gives me permission to share

Parents and guardians, we are in a partnership for your student’s success. Please know that I will not withhold information from you if it is pertinent to you or your child’s safety or well-being.
